Preparing your workspace:
Prepare all tools and materials in front of you
Cover the table with a silicone mat or a sheet of parchment paper to avoid getting it dirty and messy
Making process:
(a) Mandarin
Measure the required amount of paraffin on a scale, usually 46-50 grams for a standard mold.
melt the paraffin and color it orange, if desired, add fragrance, mix well
cut and wrap the wick in the melted paraffin, let it harden a bit
with a thick needle thread the wick into the mold, try to leave a long enough wick on the side where the top of the tangerine will be for further convenience.
Pour the liquid paraffin into the mold and fix the wick in the center using a wick holder or sushi sticks.
Once the wax has set in the mold, trim the wick and refill 1-2 times.
After complete hardening, remove the tangerine from the mold.
b) peel
measure equal amounts of paraffin wax and bleached beeswax on a scale, if your beeswax is not very plastic, you can add 10-20% of soft microcrystalline wax to this mixture (important: do not overheat the mixture, as micro wax can lose its properties).
color the melted mixture with white and orange dyes, add fragrance if desired, mix well
simultaneously heat water to 70-80 degrees Celsius and cool the wax mixture to the minimum temperature at which it remains liquid (60-70 degrees Celsius).
Pour the water into the container and then the wax mixture, dip the tangerine in it, holding it by the wick 6-8 times with small pauses of a few seconds, so that each layer of wax has time to set a bit
let the tangerine cool down
c) Peel texture:
Using a crumpled piece of foil, give the rind the appropriate texture by pressing it against the surface
d) tinting:
Add a drop each of orange and yellow coloring to the palette.
Using a brush or sponge, tint the surface of the tangerine with the coloring mixture.
wait for it to dry completely
add a drop of green and yellow dyes to the palette and tint the top of the tangerine.
wait for complete drying
e) cleaning:
using a stationery scalpel, make incisions in the top corresponding to the tangerine slices.
Using a needle, pry off the peel starting from the top.
Use your fingers to bend back a piece of peel
peel the tangerines as much as your taste dictates.
(f) Albedo (white streaks):
Melt some uncolored or white colored paraffin wax
Using a brush, gently brush the paraffin onto the back of the peel.
Do the same with the tangerine, but apply the paraffin to the tangerine more firmly to create the texture of the veins.
NB: If you fundamentally do not want to use paraffin wax in your candles, you can replace it with bleached beeswax. If you want to create a tangerine candle without the peel, it is not so important which manufacturer's wax you choose.
If you are making tangerines with peels, then choose the most non-sticky wax possible, although even in this case it will be more difficult to separate the peel than from paraffin.
You can also mix paraffin and beeswax not only for the peel, but also for the tangerine itself, but the proportions in this case will have to be chosen independently, and it will depend on the properties of your particular wax.
When creating white veins, paraffin can be replaced with stearin or palm microcrystalline wax. It is not necessary to color them white, as these types of waxes are white enough on their own.
You can also use the same mixture for coating the inside of the peel as for the peel itself, but colored only white. This way it will be more elastic and when trying to bend the edges of the rind differently in an already finished candle, there is no risk that the paraffin will break. You can coat the peel with this mixture both with a brush, as shown in the lesson, and by dipping directly when creating the peel itself. That is, dip the tangerine 3-4 times in the white mixture and 3-4 times in the orange mixture.
As you can see, you can create mandarin candles from different materials and in different ways. Choose those that in your opinion are more acceptable to you and experiment.
